Projects
Here are a list of projects that I have ideas for and would like to do. Any constructive comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome.
Note: For now, it’s going to be pretty sparse here with just text based ideas. Later I plan on adding pics of in-progress projects and illustrations.
1. Computer Desk - Literally
I want to get a nice large wooden desk, preferably something older (i.e. Used and Cheap) and add in a working PC to the desk’s innards. I figure that one of the large bottom drawers can be used as the actual PC case while running extension cords from the back of the drawer to custom made ports inlaid into the desk’s surface, such as a USB hub, monitor and speaker jacks, etc. I think it would be awesome to also have the DVD tray use a smaller drawer as a faceplate as well, something to make it blend in.
The only problems I forsee, besides getting a suitable desk to start with, is the possible heat issues associated with keeping a running PC trapped inside a tiny, mostly closed, box. Depending on the desk design, I’m thinking that either fans with accompanying holes in the bottom/side of the drawer may suffice, or if needed, a coldplate from a mini-fridge combined with some hydrophillic pellets (water absorbers) to catch condensation.
So, to recap:
Things I Need: Old, Cheap Sturdy Wooden Desk
PC Guts to Put in Desk
Extension Cords for DVI, Audio, USB, Ethernet
2. Pegboard Tool “Book”
I think I saw an article in MAKE magazine about this project but I can’t recall for sure. In any case, the project is basically taking a bunch of pegboard, mounting each piece on a PVC pipe, and then standing the PVC pipes in a mounted box/base with another base at the top. In essence, you make something that looks like a Poster display at Wal-Mart, except you can store tools on each “page” of the pegboard.
My alternative idea was to forgo mounting the top and bottom base (I believe it was attached directly to a concrete workshop/garage floor) and instead, go with a larger, but detached bottom base that had removable weight. Thus, making it more practical for apartment use, as well as allowing easier expasion and mobility (drill more holes in the base, add more weight as needed).
Again, as above, there are some potential problems that I forsee, such as possibly needing a whole lot o weight to keep it structurally stable, having a hard time getting each “page” to open and close easily without bending/leaning (since there isn’t a top base holding it vertically), and also, just how much weight can a pegboard peg hold before it too becomes unstable. The last thing I want is to hear a couple hundred dollars worth of tools come crashing down in the middle of the night.
Things I Need: Couple sheets of pegboard
Easy source of movable weight
PVC piping
Pegboard accessories and hooks
I’ll leave it at that for now. I have a huge list of other projects that I’d like to do that I need to go through and decide what may actually be feasible. I just don’t think a Steampunk Frozen Mercury Sniper Rifle is in the cards for me.
